How to measure for a recess or exact fit blind

With Make My Blinds we aim to make everything as simple as possible when it comes to buying your new blinds online. We’ve gone and put all of our blind measuring knowledge in one place for you so regardless of your window you’ll be able to measure for blinds in no time. Here we have the 2 options for measuring, recess fit or exact fit.

    Recess fit blind

A recess blind fits inside the window recess (the box your window sits inside). If you want your blind to sit inside here then we need to take 6 measurements.

3x width measurements (one at the top, middle and bottom).

3x drop measurements (left, middle and right).

    Steps:

    1. Grab a metal tape measure, a pencil and a notepad.
    2. Start with the width of your window.
    3. Measure the width at the top of your window recess – write this down in millimeters.
    4. Measure the width in the middle of your window recess – write this down in millimeters.
    5. Measure the width in at the bottom of your window recess – write this down in millimeters.
    6. Now do the same from the drop.
    7. Measure the drop on the left side of the window recess  – write this down in millimeters.
    8. Measure the drop in the middle of the window recess  – write this down in millimeters.
    9. Measure the drop on the right side of the window recess  – write this down in millimeters.
    10. Now use the smallest measurement for the width and drop when you order your blinds.

    Hints

    • Record all measurements to the nearest millimeter.
    • Make sure to use a metal tape measure for accuracy.
    • Use the smallest width and smallest drop as the measurements.

With the measuring always measure twice to be certain, better safe than sorry! We will deduct a small amount from your width (30mm) to make sure you get a nice, tight fit with a roller blind. With wooden blinds, we deduct 1cm off the total width to ensure a nice, tight fit – that’s 5mm off either side. It is important to make sure you use the smallest measurement when ordering. Now all you need to do is enter your 2 smallest measurements into our ‘Enter your Measurements’ box and off you go.

    Exact Blinds

An exact blind fitting is used for when you want to fit your blinds outside of the window recess and overlap the edges, for this you will only need to measure twice.

    Steps:

    1. Work out the height you want your blind to sit.
    2. Measure to where you want the blind to stop (the drop).
    3. Measure the width you want your blind to be in milimeters.
    4. Measure the drop you want your blind to be in milimeters.

Enter these measurements into our website when ordering your blind and choose the ‘exact’ measurement option.

    Hints

    • Use a faint pencil mark to make sure you are measuring from the right spot.
    • Use a metal tape measure.
    • Record all measurements to the nearest millimeter.
    • Make sure you are not going to be obstructed by anything, either by the width or the drop.

With Exact blinds we do give you another choice to make too – Bracket to Bracket or Fabric width.

    Bracket to Bracket

If you select this option this is the maximum width your blind will be, including the brackers. The fabric will be approximately 3.5cm smaller than the width given.

    Fabric Width

Choose this option to ensure the width of your fabric. Please remember that the brackets will add an extra 3.5cm to the total width of your blind. This option is best if you are replacing an existing blind, simply measure the width of the fabric and choose this option.
